From the heights of the Atacama Desert, 5,000 meters above sea level, a Chilean team just accomplished something out of science fiction: observing galaxies that were born when the universe was just 1 billion years old šŖš¶
Thanks to the ALMA Observatory, and with data from the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes, Chilean astronomers ā led by Rodrigo Herrera-Camus ā captured images of these early cosmic structures.
What did they see? Galaxies with spinning disks, galactic winds reaching over a million kilometers per hour š±šØ and huge clouds of cold gas and cosmic dust ā essential ingredients for life as we know it šš±
This achievement, called Project CRISTAL, was published in one of the worldās most prestigious scientific journals, positioning Chile as a global leader in astronomy šš
š What makes this story awesome?
š Showcases the talent and leadership of Chilean scientists in cosmic discoveries
š§Ŗ Helps us better understand how the first galaxies ā and maybe life ā were formed
šŗļø Reinforces Chile as one of the best places on Earth to study the stars
Looking back at the universe's past is a beautiful way to understand our present⦠and dream of the future āØā¤ļø
